DESCRIPTION
This series empowers staff to step up and address patient and visitor bias or misconduct in a confident, respectful, yet assertive manner. Two overarching communication strategies are used, SAFER for responding to misconduct and ASAP for responding to bias. SAFER, ASAP and other relevant communication strategies are applied to different, salient present day challenges facing frontline employees and clinicians at Mayo Clinic. Experts from across the institution weigh in on top-of-mind topics and call us to action around supporting an environment of mutual respect and safety with our patients and visitors. 
 
TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience is all Allied Health Professional, Athletic Trainer, Dentist, Healthcare Executive, Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Optometrist, Pharmacy Technician, Physician, Physician Assistant, Psychologist, Resident Fellow, Scientist Researcher PhD, Social Worker, and Students.
 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Develop foundational understanding of patient and visitor conduct concepts through communication and policy topics. 
  • Apply communication strategies to case scenarios in response to disrespectful, derogatory, or discriminatory behavior.
  • Distinguish differences between Mayo Clinic Patient and Visitor Conduct and other workplace violence groups.
