SAFER: Mental Illness, Substance Use, and Violence.

The relationship between serious mental illness, substance use, and violent behavior is complex. While certain symptoms and factors related to mental illness may be noteworthy in terms of violence prevention, there is not a strong connection between serious mental illness and violent behavior. While the connection between substance use and aggression is more significant, it can be challenging for clinical staff to look beyond a patient’s diagnosis and develop situational awareness in alignment with actual violence risk.

Join a panel of Mayo Clinic experts as they discuss mental illness, substance use, and violent behavior.
