PRESENTER BIO

Josephine Johnston is Associate Professor at the University of Otago’s Bioethics Centre in Dunedin, New Zealand. She works on a variety of ethical, legal, and policy issues in medicine and science, with a particular focus on human reproduction, genetics, and the conduct of research. From 2012-2022, Josephine was Director of Research at The Hastings Center, an independent bioethics research institute in Garrison, New York. Her scholarly work has appeared in medical, scientific, policy, law, and bioethics journals, including NEJM, Science, Nature, and Hastings Center Report. She is co-editor of the books Human Flourishing in an Age of Gene Editing (Oxford University Press, 2019) and Trust and Integrity in Biomedical Research: The Case of Financial Conflicts of Interest (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010). Josephine teaches medical law to medical, dentistry, and pharmacy students at the University of Otago and serves as co-chair of the Health Research Council of New Zealand’s Ethics Committee.

Upon completion of this activity participants should be able to: 

  • Identify the ethical and legal basis for age restrictions in the New Zealand context  

  • Distinguish reasoning based on the right not-to-know from relational reasoning and indigenous sovereignty approaches 

  • Evaluate a proposal to both remove age restrictions and better support family decision-making
