The 8th Annual Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Summit is be a hybrid course offering live lectures as well as a simultaneous livestream. It covers all aspects of the upper extremity including the hand/wrist, elbow, and shoulder. In addition, it reviews physical exam techniques, appropriate imaging modalities, rehabilitation strategies, and when surgery is indicated. This course provides an update on the use of biologics for common upper extremity injuries, and discusses all aspects of the care of the overhead/throwing athlete with live ultrasound demonstrations. Faculty representing orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, radiology, plastic surgery, athletic training, and physical therapy lead didactic and interactive case presentations and panel discussions.
Target Audience
This course is designed for athletic trainers, physical therapists, NPs, PAs, sports medicine physicians, family physicians, physiatrists, internists, pediatricians, ER physicians, orthopedists, and medical providers involved in the care and management of athletes and active individuals in clinic or nonoperative/nonsurgical/noninvasive settings. Orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, and other healthcare professionals interested in sports medicine may benefit from this program.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Discuss how to approach the athlete with complaints of palpitations (Domain II, Task: 0201 & 0202)
- Identify the best management for an in-season athlete with an acute hamstring injury (Domain IV, Task: 0401 & 0404)
- Discuss the clinical indications and use of shockwave therapy (Domain IV, Task: 0402)
- Review the ideal way to harvest and prepare an ACL graft for ACL reconstruction surgery (Domain II, Task: 0204)
- Review the latest in ACL prevention programs (Domain I, Task: 0101 & 0102)
- Identify the most current ankle rehabilitation modalities for an acute injury (Domain IV, Task: 0401 & 0406)
- Review how to prepare athletes to progress back to high-level running athletic activities status post ACL reconstruction (Domain IV, Task: 0403 & 0406)
