Title: Phenotypic and Genomic Architecture of Bipolar Disorders and Its Clinical Implications

Introduction:

Dr. Kyung Sue Hong is a distinguished Professor of Psychiatry with a remarkable career spanning over two decades. From 1997 to 2021, Dr. Hong served as a Professor of Psychiatry at Sungkyunkwan University, Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. Since 2022, Dr. Hong has been a Professor (Partner) in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia and a Consulting Psychiatrist at Lions Gate Hospital HOpe Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health.

Dr. Hong's research focuses on clinical, genetic, and pharmacogenetic studies related to bipolar disorders and schizophrenia. With over 100 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious international journals, including the Archives of General Psychiatry and Biological Psychiatry, Dr. Hong has made significant contributions to the field. Notably, Dr. Hong has identified phenotypic dimensions in bipolar disorders through deep phenotyping and genomic validation methods, promoted the understanding of second-generation antipsychotics-associated syndromes, and clarified ethnic differences in the pharmacokinetic and pharmacogenetic characteristics of clozapine.

In addition to research, Dr. Hong is actively involved in various academic and social activities, participating in both Korean and international academic societies such as the International Society for Bipolar Disorders, Schizophrenia International Research Society, and Psychiatric Genomics Consortium.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize why genomic studies are essential in the clinical understanding of bipolar disorders.
  2. Interpret the genome-wide studies in bipolar disorders from clinical and ontological perspectives.
  3. Describe ways of stratifying clinical and pharmacological dimensions of the underlying biological basis.
