Speaker #1: Laura Suarez Pardo, M.D.

Title: Beyond the Heart: Integrating Psychocardiology into Outpatient Care

Introduction:

Dr. Suarez is a graduate of Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, where she began her medical career as a general practitioner serving an underserved community. She subsequently pursued a research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Cardiac Psychiatry Research Program, followed by a Psychiatry residency and Consultation-Liaison Fellowship at Mayo Clinic.  

Dr. Suarez’s primary clinical practice is in outpatient consultation-liaison psychiatry, with a specialized focus on psychocardiology. Her work is dedicated to enhancing mental health care for patients with cardiovascular conditions and other complex medical illnesses, including oncology and functional disorders. 

Since joining the Mayo Clinic Psychiatry Department faculty in 2022, Dr. Suarez has made significant strides in advancing mental health care for cardiovascular patients, furthering her research in psychocardiology through extensive collaborations and active funding. She is also deeply committed to addressing healthcare disparities and has expanded her work to support the Latinx and Somali communities becoming an active member of the Rochester Healthy Community Partnership. Dr. Suarez is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion and serves as one of the DEI co-chairs for the Psychiatry Department. She has also developed culturally sensitive psychiatry training programs for residents to foster a more inclusive and responsive approach to Psychiatry patient care.

3.Describe the key patient demographics, disease trajectories, and common psychiatric comorbidities encountered in psychocardiology outpatient care.
