Speaker #1: Walter Franz III, M.D.

Title: For The Good Of The Order

Introduction:

Walt Franz MD is a staff member of the Department of Family Medicine, Mayo-Rochester. 

Starting in 1978 in the first group of family medicine residents at Mayo, he completed a three-year residency in family medicine followed by a one-year fellowship.  

He has been on staff since 1982 and practices in the Baldwin Building primarily providing acute care services to community patients.   

 He served in the United States Army Reserve for 24 years, with several deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as a medical corps officer.  

 Dr. Franz’s main interests academically are the use of simulation to mentor learners in care in underserved and unconventional environments (CUUE), supporting veteran health at for Mayo through the Veteran MERG, and while serving as a member of the HICS Primary Care team, developing how primary care will support emergency services in the event of a mass casualty response  

The title of his presentation is “For the Good of the Order”, presenting some past and present issues affecting the health and wellbeing of veterans and service members.  

Learning Objectives:

  1. Examine case studies of bias and health disparities affecting veteran care. 

  2. Recognize and honor great service and sacrifice. 

  3. Demonstrate some key points pertinent to care of veterans 

  4. Use these cases to illustrate mitigation of these disparities.
