Title: Descriptive Psychopathology |Re-Integrating the Art & Philosophy of Psychiatry into Residency Education

Introduction:

Dr. Kate Hagen is approaching the end of her Adult Psychiatry residency training at Mayo Clinic and excited to begin her next chapter at UCLA where she recently matched into Child and Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship.  This past academic year, she was accepted into the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and is currently completing advanced coursework in psychodynamic psychotherapy. She has a particular interest in factors, such as trauma and adverse childhood experiences, that contribute to the development of psychopathology, as well as mediating circumstances that contribute to psychological resilience.

Prior to her medical training, Dr. Hagen attended college at UC Berkeley and UW Madison where she earned a degree in Neurobiology with a certificate in Gender and Women’s studies. She was part of the first graduating class at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Her academic pursuits include development neurobiology, oculometric markers of mild cognitive impairment, conceptual and cultural models of medicine in Native communities, unconscious bias in medical education, and genetic markers in adolescent depression.

Dr. Hagen is a member of the Clinician Educator Track (CET) at Mayo Clinic and is completing an educational project aimed at re-integrating the art and philosophy of psychiatry into residency education. Her goal is to enhance critical thinking skills, guided by philosophical frameworks, as a means of adding depth and breadth to patient formulation. By improving formulation, trainees will have a greater opportunity to think creatively about mental health interventions and avenues to affect change. Dr. Hagen also aims to empower trainees to master the art of psychiatry through descriptive psychopathology techniques.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Analyze whether the Art & Philosophy of Psychiatry matters in clinical practice and trainee education.

  2. Integrate the principles of the Art & Philosophy of Psychiatry and propose an intervention that will improve resident education.
