Session date:
10/30/2024 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Speaker #1: Dr. Iain Campbell

Dr. Iain Campbell is the Baszucki Research Fellow in Metabolic Psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh. Dr. Campbell has lived experience of Bipolar Disorder Type 2 and draws on his experience of the condition to inform his research. His research investigates metabolic treatment modalities for serious mental illness and the influence of metabolic dysfunction in the central nervous system. Dr Campbell is a principal investigator on a pilot trial of a ketogenic diet for bipolar disorder; a co-investigator on the UKRI Medical Research Council Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry, and a co-investigator and lived experience lead on Wellcome Trust circadian research projects Helios-BD and Ambient-BD. His work has been published in Nature Press journals Molecular Psychiatry and Translational Psychiatry. He has recently presented his research on ketogenic diet in symposia at the International Society of Bipolar Disorders and The Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress.

At the conclusion of this activity/session/course, participants should be able to:

  1. State the % of epilepsy patients who achieve seizure reduction, and seizure remission on a ketogenic diet, reported in Cochrane review of 13 randomized controlled trials.  Reference: Martin-McGill, K. J., Jackson, C. F., Bresnahan, R., Levy, R. G., & Cooper, P. N. (2018). Ketogenic diets for drug-resistant epilepsy. The Cochrane database of systematic reviews, 11(11), CD001903. https://doi.org/10.1002/14651858.CD001903.pub4

  2. State the metabolic, metabolomics, psychiatric and magnetic resonance spectroscopy brain imaging outcomes of a ketogenic diet in bipolar disorder observed in this pilot study.

  3. Describe the proposed role of insulin signaling mechanisms in bipolar disorder pathophysiology.

  1. Describe the proposed mechanism action of ketosis in lowering brain glutamate and compare this to the effects of anti-seizure medications on brain glutamate.
