Speaker #1: Balwinder Singh, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Singh is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Associate Program Director for the Mood Psychiatry Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, as well as a KL2 Scholar. He earned his medical degree from Goa Medical College in India, followed by a master's degree in clinical & Translational Science at Mayo Clinic in 2013. He completed his Psychiatry Residency at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, Fargo, ND, where he served as Chief Resident. 

A Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Singh has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology’s 0.2 FTE SAC Award (2018), the Early Career Investigator Award (2019), multiple Small Grant Awards (2019, 2022 x2, 2024), and the Teacher of the Year Award (2023-24). He is also the recipient of the prestigious KL2 Career Development Award, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Mayo Clinic's Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS), as well as the Alpha Omega Alpha Award. Singh is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and the Associate Program Director for the Mood Psychiatry Fellowship at Mayo Clinic, as well as a KL2 Scholar.  

Dr. Singh has over 130 peer-reviewed publications, 7 book chapters, 1 book, and an H-index of 32. His research focuses on the neurobiology of mood disorders, exploring novel treatments—particularly ketamine—and investigating biomarkers to advance individualized treatment approaches for treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder. 

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Provide an overview of the historical context and key studies on ketamine for Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD).  

  1. Review concerns about unregulated ketamine use and the latest data on predictors and novel biomarkers of response. 

  2. Discuss evidence supporting intravenous ketamine and intranasal esketamine for TRD.
