Shared Decision-Making for the Treatment of Bipolar Depression

Manuel Fuentes Salgado, M.D.

INTRODUCTION
Dr. Fuentes Salgado is a Mood Fellow in the Psychiatry and Psychology Department in Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.

He completed his Medical School and Psychiatry Residency at Universidad de Chile. He previously did a research fellow in Mood Disorders in Mayo Clinic, and clinical rotations at Psychiatry Departments of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Spain, and Pitié-Salpêtrière University Hospital in Paris, France. He worked as a consultant in the Psychiatry and Psychology Department of Clinica Alemana and as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago, Chile.

At Mayo, he is currently working in projects exploring the influence of life stressors and social determinants of health over the course of bipolar disorder, the development of a shared decision-making tool for the treatment of bipolar depression and a group intervention focused in improving adherence to Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), in collaboration with Olmsted County. He has presented in conferences and published with research teams in USA, Europe, and South America. His interest after the fellowship is to continue to strengthen the relation between institutions, trying to have an impact in the quality of care for patients, creating educational opportunities for students and building bridges for future research collaborations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define the Shared Decision-Making (SDM) concept and examine the use of decisional aids to help in the process.
  • Review some of the current uses of Shared Decision-Making tools in Psychiatry and in other areas of Medicine
  • Illustrate about the process of developing a shared decision-making educational intervention for the treatment of bipolar depression.


Speaker #2:
Sex-Dependent Vulnerability to Mood and Psychotic Disorders: Implications for Treatment Outcomes

Mete Ercis, M.D.

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Mete Ercis is a Mood Fellow at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He completed his psychiatry residency at Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, Turkey. Some of his academic interests are psychiatric nosology, relationship between personality and mood disorders, suicide, diagnostic complexities, and predictors of treatment responses. He just received a scholarship award for American Psychopathology Association 2023 Annual Meeting with his work on ‘Sex Differences in Symptom Profiles in Prodromal Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder’. He is currently working with Drs. Aysegul Ozerdem, and Balwinder Singh, and studying sex differences in mood disorders and influence of family history and genetic risk on treatment outcomes in bipolar disorder.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify sex differences in the prevalence and course of illness of severe mental illnesses.
  • Describe biological mechanisms of sex differences encountered in major psychiatric disorders.
  • Review sex differences in treatment outcomes of mood and psychotic disorders.
