Recognizing Reliable and Meaningful Change in Cognitive and Psychological Assessment

Alyssa Neumann, Ph.D.

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Alyssa Neumann is a PGY-2 pediatric neuropsychology fellow within the Medical Psychology Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic. She completed her graduate training in clinical psychology at Washington State University and clinical internship at Children’s Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis. Dr. Neumann’s clinical, research, and quality improvement interests all converge on better understanding early-life contributors to neurodevelopment in children with complex or chronic medical conditions, such as those which begin in the perinatal period. She is passionate about improving access to services which promote optimal developmental trajectories and neuropsychological outcomes. Previously, Dr. Neumann developed and taught an undergraduate Psychometrics course and enjoys “getting lost in the weeds” of the statistics involved in psychological testing and measurement.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Differentiate statistically reliable and clinically meaningful change in cognitive scores or psychological symptoms and state why it is important to recognize both.
  • Identify three methods for determining whether change is statistically reliable.
  • Report at least one new consideration to apply in practice when assessing whether a patient has undergone a meaningful change in scores or symptoms.

Speaker #2:

Gender Diversity in Youth with Chronic Pain

Jennifer Scheurich, Ph.D.

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Jenny Scheurich is a second-year medical psychology postdoctoral fellow on the clinical child/pediatric psychology track. She completed her doctoral training at the University of Central Florida and her internship at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City. Dr. Scheurich’s primary clinical and research interests are related to pediatric pain psychology.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define gender identity.
  • Describe gender minority stress and how it may interact with pain.
  • Name at least one recommendation related to providing gender-affirming care for youth with chronic pain.
