LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recall the extent to which nineteenth-century cities offered a fertile environment for medical observations of physical appearances and mental disorders.
  • Recognize the historical, urban, and practice contexts in which such observations took place.
  • Identify ethical issues arising from these contexts, related, for example, to the way such observations were incorporated into medical understandings which retain clinical currency today; and from the manner in which the observations impacted on patients' privacy and influenced relations between patients and practitioners.
