Evaluation of Care in Psychiatry: Trials and Reviews – Past, Present and Future
Professor Clive E. Adams
Born where the Mourne mountains sweep down to the sea (see below), Clive Adams qualified in Medicine from Queen’s University Belfast, rather a long time ago. He worked in Northern Ireland, and then moved across the Irish Sea to start training in psychiatry in Bradford, Yorkshire, then London and Oxford. In London he took a year out of mainstream training to undertake epidemiology training at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In Oxford, after a couple of years preparation, he founded the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group (1994). Now this global network of thousands of reviewers, producing and maintaining hundreds of systematic reviews within the Cochrane Library and the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group remains one of the most productive within healthcare. Systematic reviewing drags you into also doing the trials and Clive spent quite a while undertaking ranodmised trials with collaborators in Australia, Brazil, China, Finland, India, Lebanon and Syria focused on managing psychotic people with acute aggression, and, more latterly, when approaching retirement, on the measurable effects of provision of evidence of the effects of care of people with schizophrenia of social media (Twitter, Weibo, Wikipedia). Clive is now Chair of Mental Health Services Research in the University of Nottingham (Emeritus) – but is learning new skills in welding, gardening and wood carving. (AI) platforms.
