DESCRIPTION
This course will provide background and practical aspects of operating a carbon ion/heavy particle therapy center, as well as treatment considerations, radiobiology, physics, and current literature that is pertinent to treating patients with heavy ions. This series will occur once monthly.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for Physicians, Resident fellows, and Scientist Researchers.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe technological considerations and beam characteristics of carbon ion accelerators.
- Differentiate the physical aspects of clinical carbon ion beams.
- Describe the biological underpinnings of carbon ion therapy and compare and contrast with photons and protons.
- Demonstrate the role of carbon ion therapy in the treatment of a spectrum of malignancies.
- Identify appropriate patients with brain tumors that will benefit from carbon ion therapy.
- Interpret potential side effects of carbon ion therapy to the brain.
