Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

  1. Review potential options when law and ethics are in conflict or tension with respect to decision making at end of life.
  2. Assess when surrogates may (or may not) be able to make decisions contrary to prior patient wishes.
  3. Explain when Jesse’s Law applies and how teams can provide appropriate end of life support within the confines of the law.

Bio: Lexi C. White, J.D., Ph.D, HEC-C is the Clinical Ethics Director at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center in Glendale, Arizona. She is also adjunct faculty and associate director of the Ethics 1 course at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. She completed her fellowship in Clinical Ethics at the Wellstar Health System in Atlanta Georgia. She received her Ph.D. in Sociocultural Anthropology from the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University and her J.D. from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, also at Arizona State University. She is admitted to the practice of law in Arizona. Prior to working in clinical ethics, Dr. White worked in public health, public health law, and global health.
