Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the definition of palliative sedation and its role in end-of-life care.
  2. Recognize the ethical dilemmas surrounding the practice of palliative sedation.
  3. Identify patients in which palliative sedation may be a reasonable and compassionate therapeutic option.
  4. Compare the pharmacological agents commonly used in palliative sedation and their dosing regimens.

Bio:

Dr. Murphy attended University of South Carolina for undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice.  Then attended St. George’s University School of Medicine for medical school alongside his truly inspired colleague, Dr. Timothy Kokanovich.  He then completed his Family Medicine residency with Creighton University School of Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.  He then went on to complete his Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.  He is an Assistant Professor of Palliative Medicine with the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and has recently started as a consultant on the Mayo Clinic Clinical Ethics team.  In his free time, he enjoys traveling, hiking, and trying the newest Happy Hour spot.
