Mayo Clinic's Gastroenterology for the Hospitalist Provider Online Course offers didactic sessions focusing on common GI diseases and situations encountered in the inpatient setting.  It is geared towards hospitalists needing to consult gastroenterologists on patients with issues related to GI, such as GI bleeding, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients, pancreatitis, and acute diverticulitis.  The course aims to provide practical knowledge and decision-making skills for managing these conditions and knowing when to consult gastroenterologists for specialized care.

This online course is repurposed recording content from the live Gastroenterology for the Hospitalist Provider 2024 course.

Target Audience

The target audience for the course includes hospitalists, general internists, and physicians working in acute care settings, such as emergency departments or urgent care, who need to manage common gastrointestinal conditions encountered in the inpatient environment. The course is also relevant for residents and fellows in internal medicine or family medicine training in hospital settings, as well as nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) who collaborate with hospitalists in patient care.

Learning Objectives

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify recent practice changes in the management of acute pancreatitis
  • Recognize available diagnostic and treatment options for patients hospitalized with lower GI bleeding
  • Identify key management recommendations for patients hospitalized with acute diverticulitis
  • Identify options usable to manage patients admitted with upper variceal bleeding
