Advanced Critical Care Nursing Online CNE Course: Respiratory Assessment and Mechanical Ventilation

As a critical care nurse, your accurate assessment and quick intervention for patients with respiratory distress is imperative.  This module will review oxygenation and ventilation of the patient as they deteriorate.  Concepts in this module include normal negative pressure ventilation through positive pressure mechanical ventilation and the nursing considerations for your patient along the continuum.  

Target Audience

This course is designed for nurses working in intensive care units.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Review normal anatomy and physiology of respiratory system 

  • Identify ways to assess and evaluate your patients oxygenation and ventilation 

  • Discuss the signs and symptoms of respiratory failure and indications for mechanical ventilation 

  • Describe the nursing role in the intubation process 

  • Discuss components of basic ventilator modes, settings and common alarms
