Advanced Critical Care Nursing Online CNE Course: Advanced Cardiac Concepts

In the ICU setting, our framework for hemodynamic instability is preload, afterload, and contractility. This course focuses on this framework and the various shock states that can affect this framework. We will discuss how to apply this framework to guide the nurse when assessing and treating a patient. 

Target Audience

This course is designed for nurses working in intensive care units.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Compare and contrast preload, afterload and contractility as they relate to cardiac output and blood pressure 
  • Discuss how constriction and dilation affect afterload and forward flow
  • Compare and contrast shock states
  • ​​Describe SvO2 in relation to oxygen delivery and consumption
