Bio:

Hannah Farfour is a nurse practitioner in the Division of Palliative Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona.  She is also the Program Director for the NP/PA Hospice and Palliative Fellowship.  She attended Arizona State University for her advance practice nursing and doctoral training.  Previously, she worked as a RN in multiple specialties including ICU, Medical-Surgical, and management.  She also has a B.A. in Anthropology and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  When not working, she loves to travel, eat good food, laugh, and spread joy with her three boys, two dogs, and husband.

 

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

 

  • Describe the formulations of buprenorphine available for the management of pain as well as the unique properties of the medication that differentiate it from a pure mu agonist.
  • Choose appropriate starting doses of buprenorphine and understand how to effectively titrate doses.
  • Select an appropriate dose of an opioid for the management of breakthrough pain.
  • Identify when a rotation to another opioid or integration of another modality in treatment is needed.
