DESCRIPTION
The practice of medicine operates under relentless demand, especially during overnight hours when the sick and injured require care without pause. However, providing adequate overnight radiologist coverage poses significant challenges. Physical and mental exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and disrupted circadian rhythms can impair cognitive performance, akin to intoxication. This issue has long been studied in human performance literature. Additionally, radiologists work in an environment marked by high uncertainty. While they possess extensive knowledge of disease appearances in imaging studies, they often lack complete clinical context. Moreover, variability in imaging equipment and techniques further complicates interpretation, as images can vary widely in acquisition and processing methods.
