Session date:
05/17/2023 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Summary:

Nephrolithiasis is one of the most common conditions affecting the kidney and is characterized by a high risk of recurrence. Thiazide diuretic agents are widely used for prevention of the recurrence of kidney stones, but data regarding the efficacy of such agents as compared with placebo are limited. Furthermore, dose–response data are also limited. Patients were randomly assigned to varying doses of HCTZ and objective was to investigate dose-response effect for primary end point of symptomatic or radiologic recurrence of kidney stones.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Describe the mechanism for HCTZ action in reducing urinary calcium
  • Determine the utility of HCTZ for the prevention of kidney stones
  • Identify the strengths and weakness of the NOSTONE trial

Bio:

I am currently an internal medicine resident at Mayo Clinic Arizona. I received my medical degree at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. I plan on pursuing a fellowship in hematology/oncology and hope to combine my background in tissue engineering with aspects of biomedical engineering and cancer therapeutics. I aspire to make novel contributions to the field of translational medicine and pave the way for new areas of research and clinical medicine for both solid and hematologic malignancies.
