August 15 - November 21, 2024 - Blended Online and Live/Livestream module -  Mayo Clinic - Rochester, Minnesota

This training includes dissemination of an online training module, with content on how and why to discuss SOGI status within medical oncology, and live sessions that include guest speakers and group discussions with the goal to complete the following aims:

  • To increase the knowledge of oncology staff members towards the care of sexual and gender diverse (SGD) individuals, promoting culturally competent and inclusive cancer care within the medical oncology department.
  • To enhance the attitudes and confidence of oncology staff members towards the care of SGD individuals, promoting culturally sensitive and inclusive cancer care within the medical oncology department.

Oncology staff participate in two live sessions that include reflective exercises, guest speakers, and group discussions. This voluntary training course includes both online (self-study) and live group sessions.

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, residents/fellows, care coordinators, and community health workers.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Define key terms related to sexual orientation.
  • Describe health disparities facing SDG individuals in medical oncology.
  • Apply person-centered communication techniques in simulated patient interactions using gender-affirming language and inclusive practices.
  • Identify an individualized action plan to integrate sexual orientation and gender identity sensitivity into daily practice to promote an inclusive environment.
  • Describe how SOGI discussions can improve care for SGM patients with serious illness.
  • Identify at least one SOGI resource available for staff to access supporting inclusive care for SGD patients.
  • Define key terms related to gender identity.
