PRESENTATION TITLE
Predisposition to Myeloid Malignancy

PRESENTER(S)
Katherine Calvo, M.D., Ph.D. - NIH Clinical Center, Department of Laboratory Medicine

PRESENTER BIO
Dr. Katherine Calvo received M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, San Diego in 2003.  While at UCSD she studied the role of homeobox genes in the development of acute leukemia and was a founder of the UCSD Student-Run Free Clinic.  Dr. Calvo did a residency in Anatomic Pathology and a Hematopathology fellowship at National Cancer Institute, where she conducted research on the role of cytokines in lymph node microenvironment of follicular lymphoma.

In 2008 Dr. Calvo joined the Department of Laboratory Medicine in the NIH Clinical Center as an attending hematopathologist and researcher.  Her areas of expertise and research encompass acquired and germline predisposition to myeloid neoplasia, bone marrow failure, lymphoid and plasma cell neoplasia, bone marrow disease in the setting of immunodeficiency and inflammation, and microRNA and mutation profiling of hematologic disease.  She played a major role in elucidating the bone marrow pathology of GATA2 deficiency and VEXAS at NIH.  Dr. Calvo has numerous original research articles and collaborations with investigators in NIAID, NHLBI, NHGRI, and NCI.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of germline and somatic predisposition to myeloid malignancy and clinical practice.
  • Associate pathologic and molecular features of myeloid malignancies with germline predisposition and use of bone marrow morphology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, molecular testing, and clinical correlation in identifying cases that may harbor germline mutations. Focus on GATA2 deficiency and RUNX1 familial platelet disorder.
  • Identify how somatic mutations in myeloid cells can lead to severe inflammation and predisposition to myeloid malignancy with morphologic clues in the marrow: VEXAS syndrome.

COMPETENCIES

  • Patient Care or Patient-Centered Care
  • Medical Knowledge
  • Systems-Based Practice
  • Practice-Based Learning and Improvement
