TITLE: Breast Practices: Navigating Lactation in the ED for Patients and Clinicians
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the World Health Organization’s recommendations for breastfeeding.
 - Explain the physiology of lactation, including the principles of milk supply and demand.
 - Debunk common misconceptions around “pump and dump” practices and identify reliable resources to assess medication safety during lactation.
 - Recognize medications commonly used in the ED that may impact milk supply and apply this knowledge in clinical decision-making.
 - Identify and manage common lactation-related complications such as mastitis and breast abscess.
 - Incorporate best practices for supporting lactating patients in the ED, including assessing the need for pumping support and safe milk storage solutions.
 - Discuss strategies and institutional policies for supporting lactating clinicians in the emergency department.
