The Future is Now: Advances in Hematology and Oncology Critical Care is an inaugural course in hematology oncology that highlights novel diagnostics and therapeutics in the care of the critically ill hematology oncology patient. Multidisciplinary education is offered and focuses on neurologic, cardiac, respiratory, renal and other organ failure complications. Additional perspectives on palliative care and ethical issues are discussed. There is a hands-on session on point-of-care ultrasound and a session on building high performance teams, and negotiations, communication and conflict management skills.

Target Audience

Target audience includes, physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists specializing in hematology, oncology, critical care and emergency medicine. Additional specialists who may benefit from this educational content include anesthesiologists, surgeons and hospitalists.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Assess current approaches to critical care organ-specific complications in hematologic oncologic patients.
  • Discuss novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in hematologic and solid organ tumors.
  • Evaluate strategies for complex end of life care in hematology oncology critically ill patients.
  • Identify methods of addressing conflict, improving communication, and formulating strategies for shared decision making between patients and providers amongst the care team members.
