Learning Objectives:
Upon conclusion of this program, participants should be able to:
- Recall current guidelines on coagulation treatment and transfusion practices in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)
- Summarize prior data implicating anemia and platelet dysfunction with hematoma expansion and worse clinical outcomes in patients with ICH
- Evaluate recent negative clinical trials (PATCH, FAST, and TICH-2) on coagulation treatment for ICH
- Review data demonstrating improved brain oxygenation after RBC transfusion in patients with acute brain injury
- Interpret data on benefits and risks of RBC transfusion in ICH patients
- Recognize that platelet ABO incompatibility may be associated with worse outcomes in ICH patients
- Recognize viscoelastic hemostatic assays (ROTEM and TEG) as tools to identify occult coagulopathy
- Give examples of future directions of research to improve coagulation treatment and transfusion practices for ICH patients
