This continuing medical education course provides attendees with an update on all major areas of clinical interest in hospital neurology, an emerging and fast growing subspecialty within neurology. Course content includes acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, seizures and status epilepticus, acute neuromuscular disorders, neuro-infectious disease, neuro-oncology, and inpatient management of autoimmune neurologic disorders, among other topics.

Target Audience

This course is designed for hospitalists, neurologists, physicians, scientist researchers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals, fellows, residents, and medical students.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize acute “must not miss” neurologic emergencies.
  • Implement the data supporting the use of IV thrombolysis for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke.
  • Describe the clinical evidence, patient selection, and treatment considerations for the use of endovascular therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke.
  • Diagnose and manage seizure disorders and other neurological spells.
  • Identify key aspects of diagnosis and management of acute neurologic complications in primary central nervous system malignancies.
  • Describe common complications from cancer immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint inhibitors and chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy, as well as their workup and management.
  • Identify autoimmune encephalitis and exclude its mimics.
  • Describe the central nervous system demyelinating disorders that may require care in the hospital, their differential diagnosis, their workup, and their management.
  • Recognize critical warning signs in CNS infection presentations that require urgent management.
