This course will review techniques and topics in clinical neurophysiology, including basic physiology, electroencephalography, evoked potentials, electromyography, electrocorticography, movement disorders and intraoperative monitoring. Sessions will focus on clinical correlation of various neurophysiological tests used for the evaluation of patients with epilepsy, sleep disorders, and movement disorders.

Target Audience

This course is designed for Physicians, NPs, PAs, residents, fellows, EMG techs and NCS techs interested in the clinical practice of neurophysiology, including both basic and advanced theory and practice. Those practitioners looking for a comprehensive review of the CNP or wishing to advance their knowledge base in these areas are encouraged to attend. Neurophysiology technicians, who are expected to perform these procedures and have some understanding of the interpretation are also encouraged to attend.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review normal EEG findings in pediatric and adult patients
  • Discuss abnormal EEG findings and how they correlate to clinical syndromes, including status epilepticus and electroclinical syndromes
  • Outline the basics of EEG acquisition, report creating and billing
  • Review specialized applications of clinical neurophysiology including sleep, IOM, movement disorders and intracranial EEG
  • Discuss utility of uncommon motor and sensory nerve conduction studies and when to integrate them into studies
  • Discuss updates in electrodiagnostics of common referral diagnoses to an EMG practice 
  • Review pitfalls to avoid in introducing error in EMG and how to recognize possible technical error
  • Discuss integration of neuromuscular ultrasound into an electrodiagnostic practice
  • Update on electrodiagnostic findings in uncommon and rare neuromuscular disorders
