"When Worlds Collide: The Mission of Healers & Anti-Immigrant Politics"

Mark Kuczewski, PhD, HEC

PRESENTER BIO

Mark Kuczewski, PhD, HEC is the Fr. Michael I. English, S.J., Professor of Medical Ethics and the director of the Neiswanger Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy at Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine. Mark is a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) and a Fellow of the Hastings Center. 

Mark is an experienced clinical ethicist who has long been an advocate for the equitable treatment of immigrant patients.  He was also the catalyst for Loyola Stritch School of Medicine becoming the first medical school in the nation to welcome applications from Dreamers of DACA status.  For this work, Mark has received numerous awards including being named co-winner of the Loyola University Chicago 2017 Faculty Member of the Year and the 2023 Award for Bioethics Service in the Face of Challenges from the International Association of Bioethics (IAB).

  • Identify the values of health care professionals and institutions in regard to sick and marginalized patients.
  • Analyze the challenges posed to the integrity of the medical and healing professions by anti-immigrant politics and policies.
  • Develop clinical and advocacy strategies for living out the values of the healing professions and promoting justice for immigrant patients.
