• Describe the current controversy around advance care planning.
• Appreciate that goal of care conversations, whether early or late, are principally about prognostic awareness and patient values more so than decision making.
• Recognize that when you have done the early work establishing prognostic awareness, and patient goals and values, later decision making is easier to approach.
