The Diabetes Dilemma: Differentiating Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, What to Do If Diabetes Type is Unclear, and Why Does It Matter?

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Review the criteria for diagnosis and classification of pre-diabetes and diabetes, including preclinical type 1 diabetes
  • Discuss when and how to investigate potential misclassification between type 1 vs. type 2 diabetes
  • Review the diagnosis and treatment of Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults (LADA)
  • Discuss clinical management of patients among whom the classification of diabetes remains unclear
