Title: Responding to the Culture of Violence in Healthcare: Discussing Inappropriate Behavior with Patients and Visitors

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
  • Explain the problem of violence in healthcare, including prevalence and key factors contributing to violent acts.
  • Apply communication strategies to case scenarios in response to disrespectful, derogatory, or discriminatory patient or visitor behavior.
  • Identify differences between historical and present-day workplace violence definitions and behavioral examples.

Description:
Healthcare violence accounts for 74% of workplace violence across all industries.1 The violence experienced by healthcare workers is not just physical violence, but a barrage of discriminatory, derogatory, and other complex behavior that impacts healthcare staff in significant ways. When excessive demands, belittling or humiliating words or actions, and other disruptive behaviors impact our valued employees and learners, we must respond. Challenging conversations with patients, their families, and visitors about inappropriate behavior is critical to maintaining an environment of mutual respect and transforming what if feels like to work in healthcare.

In this 60-mintue session, Mayo Clinic experts share experiences and communication strategies helpful in addressing inappropriate behavior and promoting healthcare environments of mutual respect and inclusivity.
