Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:​

  • Summarize rare diseases as global public health issue: prevalence, impact, status of access to diagnosis, care and treatment in high-income and lower-middle income settings
  • Recognize how technology (genomics and AI) is helping find and diagnose persons living with undiagnosed rare conditions; understand strategies to advance diagnosis in lower-to-middle income settings
  • Identify various challenges and emerging strategies associated with (sustainable) access to therapies
  • Analyze rare disease as more than a medical issue: need for integrated comprehensive care plans addressing social, economic, work/school, psychosocial, gender, and equity issues related to living with rare
  • Integrate rare and health complex patients AND integrate patients diagnosed with rare diseases and patients with precise (genomic) diagnosis; implications for treatment and healthcare systems
