PRESENTATION TITLE
Implementing Bioinformatics in Practice

PRESENTERS
Isa Houwink, M.D., Ph.D. & Agnieszka Buelens, MSc

PRESENTER BIOS

Elisa J. Houwink, MD, PhD is a Family Physician and Associate Professor in Family Medicine, Genetics and Pharmacogenetics in Primary Care, Mayo Clinic. She is actively engaged in research and education in the field of medicine. Her research interests revolve around prevention, screening, and early-detection methods in both common and rare diseases. She utilizes family history and genetic testing as tools in her work. Additionally, Dr. Houwink is particularly interested in the implementation of pharmacogenetics within primary care practice, aiming to enhance personalized medicine approaches.

Agnieszka Buelens is the Head of DATAETHICS and Eurolife, with extensive experience in healthcare management and strategy. She currently leads projects at the University Medical Center Göttingen, University of Göttingen, focused on addressing the ethical challenges associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biomedical Big Data (BBD).

As the coordinator of a prominent European strategic alliance, Agnieszka navigates the complex ethical landscapes of Health and Life Sciences related to BBD, contributing significantly to the responsible development and application of emerging technologies in healthcare. Her work includes guiding the implementation of scientific networks, fostering collaborations with industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers, and managing large international healthcare projects.

Agnieszka is dedicated to providing practical tools and guidelines for the ethical collection, management, and use of BBD, ensuring the sustainable impact of these guidelines in the rapidly evolving field of biomedical data. She is deeply committed to the intersection of ethics, technology, healthcare, and human rights, making lasting contributions to the ethical development of AI and BBD within the scientific community and beyond.

Agnieszka holds an MSc in International Politics from SOAS, University of London, where she studied Democracy, Human Rights, and humanitarian interventions in the global South.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Understand knowledge is available on (pharmaco)genetics, however insufficiently used in daily practice.

2. Understand Personalized Medicine requires a complete inventory of all current pharmaceutical compounds (a detailed formulary) combined with pharmacogenetic datasets, the genetic makeup of the patient, their (medical) family history and other health-related data in order to assess risk of disease or possible side effects or ineffectiveness due to medication intake.

3. Enable bioinformatics analysis of these data, it must be prepared and provided through an interface for controlled computational analysis.

ATTENDANCE / CREDIT
Text the session code (provided only at the session) to 507-200-3010 within 48 hours of the live presentation to record attendance. All learners are encouraged to text attendance regardless of credit needs. This number is only used for receiving text messages related to tracking attendance. Additional tasks to obtain credit may be required based on the specific activity requirements and will be announced accordingly. Swiping your badge will not provide credit; that process is only applicable to meet GME requirements for Residents & Fellows.
