PRESENTER BIO
Raymond De Vries is a medical sociologist with broad experience in the study of the practice and profession of bioethics, the organization of maternity care systems, research on the ethics of research, methods of qualitative and quantitative research, and the comparative study of health care systems. He is a fellow at the Hastings Center and author of A Pleasing Birth: Midwifery and Maternity Care in the Netherlands (Temple University Press, 2005), and co-editor of Birth by Design: Pregnancy, Maternity Care and Midwifery in North America and Europe (Routledge, 2001), The View from Here: Bioethics and the Social Sciences (Blackwell, 2007), Qualitative Methods in Health Research (Sage, 2010), Critical studies of risk in maternity care: Putting risk in its place (2024), and special issues of Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy (2008), Social Science and Medicine (2013), Journal of Clinical Ethics (2013), and AMA Journal of Ethics (2019).
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Think critically about the role of bioethics in health care and medical research;
- Contrast the original goals of bioethics with the way bioethics is now being practiced;
- Identify the factors that have influenced the place of bioethics in hospitals and research institutions; and
- Develop strategies for creating effective bioethics.
