DESCRIPTION:
The Mayo Clinic Audiology externs each present on work they have done this year. Two presentations focus on audiology  diagnostic testing and interpretation and two presentations focus on outcome measures in amplification, (hearing aids and cochlear implants).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Identify malignant otitis externa
  • Summarize the clinical implications of the Communication Profile for the Hearing Impaired pertaining to cochlear implant recipients  
  • Describe how hearing aid users self-assessed communicative performance with hearing aids compares to their measured communicative performance with hearing aids
  • Recognize the clinical significance of identifying a sudden sensorineural hearing loss and understand how it may be associated with future stroke


PRESENTER BIO

Kelsey Fairbanks was born and raised on the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Indian Reservation in Northern Minnesota. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences from Minnesota State University Moorhead. She then began pursuing her Clinical Doctorate of Audiology at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point/Madison Consortium. Kelsey is currently a fourth-year audiology extern at the Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato.  She enjoys interacting with pediatric patients, performing hearing evaluations, and cochlear implant programming. When not at work she enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with her ten siblings.

Megan Peterson is a 4th year Audiology student currently completing her externship with Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Mankato, Minnesota. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and is currently completing her doctorate at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UNL). While attending UNL she has held positions within their chapter of Student Academy of Audiology as Secretary of Service and then as President. She received a Graduate Research Assistantship position with the Deaf Education Department followed by the Amplification Laboratory at UNL. She completed research within the Cochlear Implant Research Laboratory (CIRL) at UNL and was mentored by Dr. Michelle Hughes while completing her capstone project. She was awarded by the American Auditory Society with the Travel Award for the research she completed.  In clinic, she enjoys working with the pediatric and geriatric populations particularly those with hearing aids and/or implants. She will continue her career with Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialty Care in Edina, Minnesota this summer following her graduation and wedding. 

Monica Amarante, B.S. is a Doctorate of Audiology student at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania-Bloomsburg. She is currently completing her fourth-year audiology externship at Mayo Clinic Florida. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in 2020. Monica has presented research at the 2019 ASHA Convention in Orlando, Florida and at the 2022 AAA Convention in Saint Louis, MO. She will also have presented at the 2024 AAA Convention in April 2024. Clinically, her interests include electrophysiology, the evaluation of vestibular and balance disorders, and tinnitus. Monica's research interests include hearing preservation, tinnitus, and adult diagnostic audiology.

Elizabeth Goodlett is a current audiology extern at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, Florida location. She holds a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences with a minor in psychology. She is finishing her doctorate through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, Arkansas and plans to stay in the Jacksonville area once completed. Her clinical interests lie within the areas of implantables, ototoxicity monitoring,  and genetic hearing loss. She has completed research under Dr. Samuel Atcherson and Dr. Robert DiSogra regarding auditory and vestibular side-effects of medications used to treat psychiatric disorders.

Biography

Heather Clark, Ph.D. 

Dr. Clark is the Chair of Speech Pathology in the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She is board-certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. She serves as co-investigator in several projects examining the nature of speech, language, and swallowing impairment in degenerative neurologic disease.  Dr. Clark has served as a topic chair for the ASHA convention, program chair of the Conference on Motor Speech, and chair of the fall conference of the North Carolina Speech Language Hearing Association.

Jill Gruenwald, Au.D.

Jill Gruenwald, Au.D., has been an audiologist with Mayo Clinic since 2018. She currently serves as the Audiology Clinic Manager and holds the rank of Instructor in Audiology. She is the Associate Program Director for the Au.D. Externship Program with the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. Her clinical specialty areas include diagnostic testing and cochlear implant services for an adult population.

Jamie Bogle, Au.D., Ph.D.

Jamie M. Bogle, AuD, PhD is the Division Chair of Audiology at Mayo Clinic Arizona and is an Assistant Professor of Audiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.  She earned her PhD in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder.  Her research interests include the integration of visual and vestibular information in individuals with complex central pathology, including concussion, and in improved understanding of the importance of vestibular gravito-inertial information into the autonomic nervous system.

Greta Stamper, Au.D., Ph.D.

Greta C. Stamper, Au.D., Ph.D., is a clinical and research audiologist in the Division of Audiology in the Department of Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. Her interests include adult aural rehabilitation and hearing loss prevention. Dr. Stamper obtained her bachelors, masters, and clinical audiology doctorate (Au.D.) degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. She obtained her Ph.D. in Audiology at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, KS and Lawrence, KS. In addition to her clinical activities, Dr. Stamper is active in research and education. She serves as the Program Director for the Audiology Externship at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville.
