PRESENTER BIOS

Michael Z Burchesky, B.A. is completing his 4th year audiology externship at Mayo Clinic (Jacksonville, FL) and will earn his Au.D. from Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, TN) upon graduation in May 2022. He completed his undergraduate degree in 2017 with a B.A. in interdisciplinary psycholinguistics with minors in music and mathematics from Hamilton College (Clinton, NY) and is originally from Pittsburgh, PA. Michael's primary clinical and research passions include cochlear implant programming, binaural hearing, music enjoyment, quality of life studies and special interests in vestibular assessment and management. During his time at VUMC, Michael enjoyed learning and serving as a student research assistant in the Cochlear Implant Lab (PI: Rene Gifford, Ph.D.) and Music Cognition Lab (PI: Miriam Lense, Ph.D.). He is now studying with supervisor, Greta Stamper, Ph.D., and the audiology team at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.

Stacey Chobany grew up outside of Washington, DC and attended the University of Massachusetts for a dual degree in Linguistics and Communication Disorders. She then moved to Philadelphia to attend Salus University’s College of Audiology, and is currently completing her fourth-year externship at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She is looking forward to moving to San Diego this summer, where she would like to continue working with cochlear implants and enjoying warm weather year-round.

Ian Cox, B.A., holds consecutive, dual-degrees in Music and Speech and Hearing Sciences from Linfield University and Portland State University, respectively. Ian is currently a fourth-year Au.D. candidate at Western Washington University (WWU) and is thrilled to be completing his clinical externship at Mayo Clinic Health Systems – Mankato, MN. Professionally, Ian aspires to promote the Mayo Model of prioritizing the needs of each patient. Ian looks forward to continually improving upon his clinical/diagnostic abilities while connecting with patients and provider throughout his career. Ian formerly served as Secretary to WWU’s chapter of the Student Academy of Audiology and co-administrator of WWU’s donation-based Hearing Aid Bank.

Amanda House, B.S., earned her undergraduate degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Amanda is currently a fourth-year Au.D. student at Western Washington University (WWU) in the beautiful pacific northwest. She is currently finishing her externship placement at Mayo Clinic Health System. Amanda’s passion for the field of Audiology stems from her years working as an Audiology Technician at Mayo Clinic. In addition to her passion for Audiology, Amanda is interested in leadership opportunities in the field, and working interprofessionally to improve patient outcomes. In her position as an Audiology Technician, Amanda served as the Coordinator for the Minnesota Academy of Audiology. During her graduate education, Amanda assisted in spearheading the formation of WWU’s Student Academy of Audiology chapter for which she served as both treasurer and president. Her position as president was used to facilitate outreach in the community as well as connections with other Au.D. programs across the country. Furthermore, she served as the liaison between the Washington State Academy of Audiology and WWU. Lastly, she held a seat on the board of the WWU Hearing Aid Bank program, which included a team of student peers and clinical supervisors to provide hearing health care to underserved populations within the community. Amanda envisions her future career at a facility in which she will be able to continue providing superior patient centered care while utilizing best practice standards.

Molly Sienko is a current third and final year Au.D. candidate at Pacific University’s School of Audiology located just outside of Portland, Oregon. She grew up just north of the Twin Cities and earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin River Falls. She majored in Communicative Disorders and minored in Psychology. Molly was on the NSSLHA executive board for two years at River Falls and is currently a Student Ambassador for Pacific University. Molly has completed clinical rotations at a variety of different settings including the Denver VA, a Midwest private practice, and the St. Paul children’s hospital. During her time in Portland Molly and a few of her classmates spent time volunteering at the Tacker Maxon School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing where she was able to gain exposure to educational audiology. She is interested in all aspects of the field and is committed to providing the highest quality of patient care through evidence-based practice. During her free time, Molly enjoys running outdoors (when Minnesota weather allows it) and hanging out with her dog.

Meredith Thomason (she/her) is one of the Mayo Clinic Rochester Audiology Externs. She will be graduating with her Doctor of Audiology degree from University of Texas at Dallas in May of 2022. She previously earned a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders and minoring in English Literature.

Emily Thompson (they/them) is an audiology extern at Mayo Rochester. They are an Au.D. student at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC. Emily is passionate about working with pediatric patients and all things electrophysiology. They are also involved in various Student Academy of Audiology projects and initiatives, including formerly serving as the chair of the SAA Diversity & Inclusion Task Force.

Alexa Velez grew up in Orlando, Florida and received a Bachelors of Science from the University of Central Florida, where she majored in Communication Sciences and Disorders and minored in Linguistics. She attends the University of Florida to obtain her Doctor of Audiology and is currently completing her fourth-year externship at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Her primary focus is implantable hearing devices with an aim to expand bimodal services for adult patients. She enjoys vestibular diagnostics and believes that the evaluation of the vestibular system is an integral component to cochlear implant candidacy. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, playing with her two cats, and keeping her house plants alive.
