DESCRIPTION
Bi-monthly PM&R Clinical Conferences allow staff to regularly review literature in the context of case presentations to update faculty and learners alike on the current standard of care practice as well as to learn and discuss new and emerging approaches to patient care in regards to diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, spine conditions, and broad topics of rehabilitation medicine.


TARGET AUDIENCE
The target audience is PM&R Department faculty (consulting staff) and therapy staff (PT, OT, Speech Therapy); rotating learners including Mayo Clinic medical students, PM&R residents, MCA Pain Medicine Fellows, MCA TY residents, and visiting medical students. Thus, physicians at all levels are represented. Allied health staff such PT and OT are welcome to attend when the topic is relevant to their clinical practice.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to: 

  • Describe the most common complications, morbidity and mortality related to rib fractures and other chest wall trauma injuries.
  • Review the indications for why a patient may have undergone acute surgical treatment of multiple rib fractures / flail chest.
  • Direct an appropriate clinical evaluation and comprehensive rehabilitation treatment plan for the patient presenting with polytrauma related chest wall injuries.
