Speaker #1: Jonathan R. Chin, M.D. 

Title: Into the Wild: The Promise & Perils of Wilderness Therapy for Adolescents 

Introduction: Dr. Chin earned his B.S. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, where he studied on behavioral genetics and the neurobiological foundations of addiction. Before earning his MD at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, he worked in adolescent addiction treatment, guided at-risk teens on wilderness expeditions, and cultivated a personal passion for backpacking, canoeing, and exploration. Later this year, he will continue his commitment to young people as a Fellow in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry here at Mayo Clinic.  

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe how wilderness therapy differs from experiential education and "therapeutic programming" 

  2. List obstacles to effective, ethical wilderness therapy.  

  3. Identify controversies relating to Wilderness Therapy and the "Troubled Teen Industry" 

 

Speaker #2: Allegra X. Campagna, Ph.D. 

Title: From Fetal Diagnosis to the Fontan Clinic: Psychology within a Single Ventricle Program 

Introduction: Dr. Allegra Campagna is a pediatric psychology fellow and Assistant Professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. She earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Washington State University and completed her internship at Boston Children’s Hospital. Her clinical and research interests center on chronic medical conditions and the psychosocial functioning of pediatric patients and their families. 

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the psychological impacts of congenital heart disease across development, from fetal diagnosis through adolescence. 

  2. Identify appropriate psychological interventions used in cardiac care settings. 

  3. Explain the role of cardiac psychologists in multidisciplinary care teams for patients with heart disease.
