A Case Series in Integrating Alternative Psychological Approaches in Pain Rehabilitation 

Dr. Matthew Schumann is board certified clinical health psychologist and assistant professor of psychology within the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Idaho State University in 2017. He completed his predoctoral clinical internship at the Minneapolis VA Healthcare System focusing on primary care-mental health integration, rehabilitation psychology within a spinal cord disorders/injury unit, and delivery of care for individuals with serious and persistent mental health concerns. He completed the Mayo Clinic Medical Psychology Fellowship program in 2019 with an emphasis on chronic pain rehabilitation and pain interventions in medical settings. After fellowship he worked as a pain psychologist as part of the Mayo Clinic Health System Southwestern Minnesota psychiatry and psychology department from 2019 to 2021. He returned to the Mayo Clinic Pain Rehabilitation Center in Mayo 2021. He has focused on clinical practice within the PRC, as well as researching psychosocial factors that contribute to meaningful improvements during and following pain rehabilitation. His research interests include accessible and scalable pain interventions that include the use of digital technology, the impact of health- and pain-related beliefs on pain management, as well as understanding and treating mental health comorbidities within the context of pain.
