Current Concepts in Extracorporeal Life Support: Medical Management and High-Fidelity Cannulation Simulations - 2025

Jacksonville, FL US
December 2, 2025 to December 5, 2025

This course offers Live (in-person) and Livestream (virtual) attendance options

Course Directors: Gregory J. Schears, M.D., Pramod K. Guru, M.B.B.S., Sanjay Chaudhary, M.B.B.S., and Troy G. Seelhammer, M.D.

December 2 - 5, 2025 - Mayo Clinic - Jacksonville, Florida

Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) is increasingly being used for refractory cardiopulmonary failure and its use in the adult population is gaining attention in clinical practice. The paucity of randomized clinical trials and guidelines has led to significant practice variation when trying to address the challenge of minimizing risk and maximizing benefit. This course provides the necessary framework for management of a patient requiring ECLS through the use of practical case-based scenarios, high fidelity hands-on simulations, and discussion of current hot topics.

Call for Abstracts

Overview: Given the success of the abstract symposia in the last three years, we are pleased to announce that the course will be offering a venue to present abstracts from all medical trainees. Abstracts highlighting topics from within the broad category of temporary mechanical circulatory support will be considered. These can be medically challenging cases, case series, or scientific studies. Abstracts will be reviewed by our course directors and decisions regarding acceptance will be made on a rolling basis. Trainees* with accepted abstracts will receive a discounted course fee ($1,600 for General Session and High-Fidelity Simulation) or ($850 for the 2-day General Session). All abstracts will require presentation at the Wednesday evening e-poster session (Wednesday, December 3 at 5:00pm) to be held at the Kinne Auditorium at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville.

*Non-trainee abstracts will be considered on an individual basis based upon merit and circumstance.

Details for Abstracts:

  • Limited to one page
    • Divide into Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusion or Introduction, Case Description, Discussion.
    • Include references; limited to 3.

Medically Challenging Cases: Minimum Mechanical Circulatory Support Details

  • Indication: pathophysiologic perturbation requiring consideration for ECMO support
  • Initiation: configuration including cannulas & device
  • Maintenance: relevant settings (ie flow, RPM, inlet/outlet pressures), major complications, any/all reconfigurations
  • Pharmacotherapy: anticoagulation, antiplatelet therapies, anti-infectives, immunosuppressants
  • Exit Strategy Employed: recovery, alternate MCS, durable device, transplant, decision, death

Submission Deadline: Abstract submission deadline is November 7, 2025.

Notification of Results: All submitting authors will be notified no later than Wednesday, November 12, 2025, if their submission has been selected for the poster session, and details regarding presentation and set-up will follow. • Discuss principles of ethics to delivery of ECMO care
  • Evaluate patient selection criteria for initiating various forms of ECMO (VV, VA, ECPR)
  • Analyze the integration of ECMO with other mechanical circulatory support devices
  • Develop a comprehensive approach to patient management, considering factors such as indications, contraindications, and potential synergies between modalities
  • Assess the optimal cannulation strategy for each scenario to enhance patient outcomes
