At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Identify the difference in behaviors associated with empathy vs sympathy: Participants will be able to articulate the behavioral differences between empathy and sympathy, including their impacts on patient care.
- Recognize Barriers to Empathy: Participants will identify common barriers to practicing empathy in healthcare settings and explore strategies to overcome these obstacles
- Create a personalized script for exploring the emotions and circumstances of patients: Participants will learn specific communication techniques to express empathy effectively while maintaining professional boundaries.
Bio: Sam Wilkes is a passionate educator with 12 years of experience as a Standardized Patient Trainer and communication specialist. He specializes in experiential learning, leveraging empathy and debriefing to deepen understanding of complex medical communication concepts. Returning to Phoenix, where he began his career at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, he has also worked at the Keck School of Medicine at USC and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. There, he developed his innovative debriefing method, "Debriefing like HEROES." At Mayo Clinic, Sam is dedicated to enhancing the use of experiential learning with Standardized Patients and expanding communication education.
