About the Presentation
Evolutionary psychiatry uses the basic science of evolutionary biology to improve the understanding, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. It is not a new method of treatment, but it offers a new framework that can guide personalized treatment planning that incorporate all appropriate modalities. This makes psychiatry much more like the rest of medicine by encouraging understanding pathology in the context of normal function. Like the rest of medicine, it distinguishes symptoms from diseases and recognizes many syndromes that result from disruption of functional systems. This perspective helps to destigmatize mental disorders and engage patients in active treatment to change their life situations when that is possible, cognitions when necessary, and to cooperate with medication and other physical treatments as appropriate. The brief overview and case vignettes in this presentation may help many clinicians recognize that they have been thinking in evolutionary terms already, and it will suggest new sources for deepening their knowledge.
