PRESENTATION TITLE
"Opioid Use Disorder and Chronic Pain"

PRESENTER(S)
Dr. Tyler Oesterle, M.D., M.P.H.

PRESENTER BIO
After completing addiction psychiatry training, I became the medical director of "Recovery Plus" a 200-bed chemical dependency treatment program in central Minnesota. I oversaw primary residential chemical dependency treatment, an independent adolescent residential addiction program (20+ beds), housing for women with children (including daycare), two halfway houses, and multiple outpatient chemical dependency treatment programs. After developing several innovative programs at Recovery Plus, I wanted an opportunity to participate in research and teaching. I was invited to return to supervise addiction service for Mayo Clinic in southern Minnesota. I am the medical director of Mayo Clinic's flagship addiction treatment program, the Intensive Addiction Program (Rochester, Minnesota). My primary role is clinical, with 50% of my time dedicated to seeing patients, 40% for research, and 10% for administrative duties. I began research during medical school when I chose to enter the University of Minnesota's MD/MPH program. My master's thesis focused on understanding the effects of early childhood interventions on disruptive behavioral disorders. As a resident and fellow in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and child/adolescent psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic, I further pursued research interests in varying areas to help complement my clinical practice. Six years ago, I took over leadership of Mayo Clinic's addiction medicine conference (Frontiers in Addiction Treatment). In 2020, I helped establish the opioid and multiple addiction biobank to further support addiction research at Mayo Clinic. In July of 2023, I became a Kern Center Science of Health Care Delivery scholar to enhance my efforts to translate non-clinical research into clinical research and future clinical practice.
