INTRODUCTION

George F. Koob, PhD, is Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). He is also a Senior Investigator at the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, where he directs the Neurobiology of Addiction Laboratory in the Integrative Neurosciences Research Branch.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) origins and validation of the three stage, three domain framework.
  • Define Opponent Process, Hyperkatifeia, Hyperalgesia, and Negative Reinforcement.
  • Identify Convergence of Pain and Negative Emotion Neurocircuits: Implications for the role of hyperkatifeia and treatment.
  • Recognize Social Determinants of Health, Deaths of Despair, COVID-19 pandemic and how it drives AUD via negative reinforcement.
