Session date:
04/05/2023 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Summary:

This cohort study of 1180 participants followed over 7.5 years looks to examine the effects of slow metabolizer CYP1A2 genotypes in relation to caffeine intake on kidney dysfunction. Specific markers of renal function used in this study included albuminuria, hyperfiltration, and hypertension.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

Identify how CYPA12 slow metabolizer genotype variants affect two specific indicators of renal function in patients who are heavy coffee consumers vs those who are not heavy coffee consumers.

  • Describe a clinical scenario where you might apply knowledge about increased risk of renal dysfunction in CYPA12 slow metabolizer genotypes who are heavy coffee consumers
  • Extrapolate findings to try and estimate effects on other scenarios where patients may have comparable caffeine consumption in non-coffee containing products
