Combined Bariatric Surgery and Organ Transplantation: A Review of the Overlapping Psychopathologies and Outcomes.

David Fipps, D.O.

INTRODUCTION
Dr. Fipps is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine. He is board certified in general psychiatry and consultation liaison psychiatry. He graduated summa cum laude from Southern Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in chemistry. He completed his medical school training at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (in Bradenton, Florida), his adult psychiatry residency at the University of South Carolina (in Greenville, SC), and his consultation-liaison psychiatry fellowship at Mayo Clinic (in Rochester, MN). He is currently a Mayo Clinic Scholar and will finish an addictions psychiatry fellowship in 2023. His clinical and research focus is on bariatric surgery psychiatry and organ transplantation psychiatry.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the rationale behind undergoing both bariatric surgery and sold organ transplant.
  • Describe the complex interplay between mental illness, obesity, and end organ failure.
  • Discuss the impact of psychiatric comorbidities on surgical outcomes: weight loss, morbidity, and mortality.


Speaker #2:
Mental Health of Immigrants and Refugees, with a Focus on Children and Adolescents

Nishant Bhat, M.B.B.S.

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Fíona Fonseca (they/them) is a consultation-liaison psychiatry fellow at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Their current fellowship includes a focus on transgender and reproductive medicine, as well as electives in neuromodulation and HIV medicine. Their professional interests also include cultural psychiatry, medical ethics, psychotherapy, and advocacy for their patients and profession. Upon completion of the fellowship year, Dr. Fonseca will continue on at the Mayo Clinic as a senior associate consultant in the psychiatry department, working closely with the transgender and intersex specialty care clinic (TISCC), while pursuing further training in clinical and translational research. Dr. Fonseca is an attendee on the Board of Trustees for the American Psychiatric Association (APA) as the chair for both the Diversity Leadership fellowship and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) fellowship through the APA foundation.

Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize risk factors that affect mental health that are associated with migration.
  • Describe the social ecological model of protective factors for children affected by armed conflict.
  • Describe some important developmental challenges related to migration.
