What's Water? Thoughts on Presence in the Practice of Psychiatry

Introduction
Dr. Daniel Hall-Flavin is Professor of Psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, and Chair of the Mayo Clinic Enterprise Committee on the Applied Health Humanities and Medical Director of the Mayo Clinic Dolores Jean Lavins Center for the Humanities in Medicine. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri, completed residency and fellowship training at Mayo, and was on the faculty of Cornell University Medical College. New York Medical College, and George Washington University Medical School before returning to Mayo. He was also Medical Director of the National Council on Alcoholism in New York and Washington, DC. In addition to practice and research in addiction psychiatry, he has more recently been involved in programming in the Health Humanities after completing his MSc studies at Kings College in London. He recently completed a Harvard-Macy Fellowship in Visual Art. Today’s presentation is the first in a series of biannual presentations on the application of the humanities in psychiatric practice.
Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize presence as a complex, multidimensional concept with targeted applications in the practice of psychiatry
- Cite both a humanities-focused and neurophysiological evidence base supporting the concept of presence
- Engage in exploratory conversations about how involvement in the humanities can help to instantiate the experience of presence in daily practice
